What is a trading bot? EA trading in MT5 explained
Updated 10 October 2026 · EzoO Bots
A trading bot is a program that opens and closes trades for you by following fixed rules. In MetaTrader 5 these bots are called Expert Advisors, or EAs, and running one is often called EA trading or bot trading. Here is what that means in practice.
What a trading bot does
A person decides the rules once: when to enter, how big the trade is, where to take profit and when to stop. The bot then watches the market every tick and acts on those rules without getting tired, scared or greedy. It does not "know" where price will go. It only does what it was told, very consistently.
What is an EA in MetaTrader 5?
An Expert Advisor is a trading bot written in the MQL5 language. You attach it to a chart in MT5, switch on Algo Trading, and it trades on that chart's symbol. The settings you see in its Inputs tab are the rules you can change: lot size, take-profit, distances, risk limits and so on.
- Runs inside your own MT5: your money stays with your broker. The EA only sends orders.
- Needs the terminal running: MT5 must stay open, so most traders use a VPS that is online all day.
- Can be tested first: the MT5 Strategy Tester replays past prices so you can see how the rules would have done.
Common types of EA
Trend and breakout bots
They wait for price to break a level or follow an indicator and ride the move with a stop-loss.
Scalpers
Very short trades for a few points. They are sensitive to spread and execution speed.
Grid and basket bots
They add trades at set distances and close them together at one target. EzoO Frame is this type. Read what is a grid EA for the details and the risks.
Is bot trading better than manual trading?
A bot removes emotion and never misses a signal, but it also repeats a bad rule perfectly. Results depend on the rules, the settings, the broker and the market. That is why the drawdown limit and a long backtest matter more than any single month of profit.
How EzoO Frame works as a trading bot
- Opens its first trade in the direction of the trend (EMA or MACD filter).
- Adds grid trades only on a new candle and at enough distance from the last one.
- Widens the grid distance before big USD news such as NFP, CPI and FOMC.
- Closes the whole basket at one take-profit, with a drawdown limit as the safety net.
